centre is one of the hemispheres of the cerebrum, which is
responsible for conscious thought, emotion and voluntary movement.
At the centre of the cerebrum is one of the temporal lobes, which
is involved in visual processing, hearing, speech and memory. At
the base of the brain is the cerebellum, which controls voluntary
muscular movement and maintains posture and balance. The brainstem,
which controls subconscious functions such as breathing and the
regulation of heart rate, connects the brain to the spinal cord
(centre to lower centre left).

Coccinella septempunctata. The male (top) and female are much the
same size, about 7mm long, with short antennae. Despite their short
legs, Coccinella septempunctata is a very good runner and a
voracious aphid hunter. It is called the "seven-spot" ladybird for
the black spots on its bright red outer wing covers. These outer
wings, strengthened into a hard, protective covering, protect the
delicate flight wings found beneath. The red and black colour is a
warning colouration to predators: this ladybird is able to squirt
distasteful fluids from its limb joints.

sp. ant. This army ant soldier has massively enlarged hook-shaped
mandibles (lower left), which it uses to defend its colony from
attack. A compound eye (blue) is in the centre of the head. The
jointed antennae protrude from just behind the mouthparts. The
antennae are used for touch and smell. The body of the ant
comprises the thorax or mesosoma, to which three pairs of legs are
attached, and the abdomen or gaster at the rear. Ants are related
to bees and wasps. They are social insects and form large colonies.

three spinning blades to destroy a tumour. On the right another
robot is attacking a blood clot (thrombus). This is one of the
possible applications nanotechnology might bring to medicine in the
future. Driven by engines invisible to the human eye, these robots
would roam through the body in search of abnormal tissue to

unharmed by the white blood cells.

a near-Earth asteroid. The rockets provide thrust which nudges the
asteroid away from an Earth-bound trajectory. The power from the
main engine of the Space Shuttle could, in theory, deflect a 1
kilometre asteroid given 30 years warning. Asteroids are minor
planets with diameters of less than 100 kilometres. A collision
with Earth would cause massive tsunamis if it hit the oceans and
block sunlight due to the huge quantities of dust thrown in to the
stratosphere. It is thought that the extinction of the dinosaurs
around 65 million years ago was caused by an asteroid impact. An
asteroid, comet or other large body posing a danger to Earth is
known as a Near- Earth Object (NEO).

presence of Escherichia coli bacteria by looking at antibiotic
resistance. The agar plate is coated with a solution prepared from
a sample supplied by a patient. Discs of filter paper soaked in
antibiotic are applied and the amount of bacterial growth is
observed. The antibiotics are (clockwise from top) piperacillin,
amoxycillin, trimethoprim, cefuroxime, ciprofloxacin and
gentamicin. Clear areas around all antibiotic disks show that the
bacterium is not resistant to any of them, which positively
identifies E. coli. The technician wears nitrile gloves and a
white coat to avoid contamination.

being cultured on an agar growth medium in a laboratory dish. The

that antibiotic. P. aeruginosa is a non-invasive and opportunistic
pathogen that rarely infects healthy individuals. It infects
patients with compromised immune systems, and is a major cause of
hospital-acquired (nosocomal) infections.

as she does biochemical typing (biotyping) on E. coli and Proteus
sp. bacteria. Cultured bacteria have been placed into a variety of
differently coloured growth media infused with chemicals on the

the different bacterial strains to be identified. E. coli and
Proteus bacteria can cause disease in humans.

nitrogen fixing bacteria, growing on YMA medium (yeast manitol
medium). The picture shows the pattern of streaking used to isolate
single colonies. Parallel lines are drawn across the culture using
a platinum wire loop as seen here. These lines are crossed and
recrossed at different angles, diluting the culture until colonies
originally formed around a single bacterium are isolated. The small
blobs in the foreground are single colonies. Streaking is an
essential technique for isolating particular strains or mutant
bacteria in mixed cultures.

heart fitness test. The electrodes monitor the electrical activity
of his beating heart. This will be recorded as the man exercises,
along with his blood pressure. Changes in these measurements will
allow an assessment of his cardiovascular fitness. Disorders like
arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), and some forms of coronary artery
disease, can be diagnosed from the test.
